Beka Tucker

Romp, expedition, adventure, odyssey, quest. Along the way, maybe I’ll find better words to describe my life. My days are filled with the work of raising children, serving a retired canine racing queen, trying to run when my body allows it, hugging my husband, choosing between board games, books, and sleep, and never being truly bored.

P.C. is what I keep saying.

Porch Kitty has now morphed into P.C., and she will sometimes come when I call her that. I'll cautiously assume this means she approves. Unlike before, when I didn't respect her space and choice as I should have, I have learned to sit on our porch step and let her come to me. I have … Continue reading P.C. is what I keep saying. →

Baby Food Day 34- Carrots!

We're in month seven now, and Baby may be eating closer to a fourth of a cup or more now at each meal. Each cube of frozen baby food is about a tablespoon, so every four cubes is about a fourth of a cup. If two cubes just doesn't seem like enough but a full … Continue reading Baby Food Day 34- Carrots! →

A New Freedom

“For good or ill, language shapes human life.  Individuals and communities may be condemned to bondage or introduced to a new freedom by the particular stories that they tell and retell and by the metaphors and parables that they employ to understand the world, themselves, and the ultimate reality called God.” -----Daniel L. Migliore The … Continue reading A New Freedom →

Couch Potato

When we first shared with family and friends that we would be adopting a retired racing greyhound, we got some questions and some quizzical expressions. Our family isn't exactly the active type. Hyper, yes. Active intentionally, no. It's not uncommon to find all of us in different corners reading books. I understand why people were … Continue reading Couch Potato →

Uprooted

I met Agnieszka a few years back thanks to NPR's book concierge and Uprooted is one of the first books I now recommend when asked for young adult or fantasy suggestions. Not only is the book interesting from the first chapter, the character development is fantastic and the plot is not predictable. I'm sure it … Continue reading Uprooted →

Pup Polish?

What color shall I paint them? I never imagined I would want to give a dog a mani-pedi, but look at them! They're just begging to be lacquered.

Off the Diving Board

Every weekday afternoon during the school year, my children bring me their folders.  Our older child resents this, feeling that their word about whether or not there is something for me to see is enough.  Our younger is oblivious, happily bringing me their green folder with no concern as to what is inside.  As usual, … Continue reading Off the Diving Board →

Anne with an E

Yesterday, I shared about my beginnings as a voracious reader. Even now, some of those friends I referenced are still here for me, soothing me through worn pages or shining a light on my face through my e-reader. Of course, I've found new friends too, and characters I didn't relate to years ago have new … Continue reading Anne with an E →

With Aplomb

I love reading.  The first book I ever read on my own was about a little dragon, and it was such a happy day.  Once the letters became words and those words became sentences, I was nearly always with a book.  I would balance precariously on windowsills in rainstorms, reading.  I’m sure my mom held … Continue reading With Aplomb →

Baby Food Day 29- Olive Oil!

I know olive oil isn't what one typically thinks of when discussing baby food. I thought it might be time to try olive oil so that you can sometimes have food that you cook not just for Baby, but for you too. Roasted butternut squash can be pureed for Baby and eaten as is by … Continue reading Baby Food Day 29- Olive Oil! →
