Beka Tucker

Romp, expedition, adventure, odyssey, quest. Along the way, maybe I’ll find better words to describe my life. My days are filled with the work of raising children, serving a retired canine racing queen, trying to run when my body allows it, hugging my husband, choosing between board games, books, and sleep, and never being truly bored.

His Little Pony

Bella isn't overtly affectionate. She doesn't lick much or run to the door to greet us. At times, she seems aloof and distant, but I can always count on her to be near when one of her human pups is sick. She seems to understand that she has something they need and only she can … Continue reading His Little Pony →

A dog and two kids, actually still at the same time.

It's rare when I can catch a moment like this. The contrast between her ear tattoo and my son's toe- her life before and her life now. Needless to say, Bella is very content here, between her boys.

Clean clothes = dog pillow.

She doesn't even care that a book could fall on her head at any moment. Happy dog.

She loves cold mornings.

Bella is especially fond of chilly mornings, because one of the boys typically brings a blanket out to snuggle on the couch. Just to the right and out of view, my oldest was using her as a pillow. He is supposed to put his blanket back before he leaves for school, but I looked the … Continue reading She loves cold mornings. →

Greyhounds sleep with their eyes open.

My husband left his knitting bag on the couch again, and Bella has taken full liberty to use it as her pillow. As soon as he left for work, she gleefully sniffed it, mouthed the handles a bit, and snuggled right on in. Greyhounds aren't obviously affectionate, but they clearly love their humans.

Greyhounds will make anything into a pillow.

My husband knits and his current project is usually never very far from him, stored in the black bag above. As soon as he leaves the couch, Bella will make herself cozy. The only thing that seems to distract her from this napping spot is the sound of food from the kitchen. Only that is … Continue reading Greyhounds will make anything into a pillow. →

Books and snuggles.

I was thrilled when our oldest was invited to be part of the school reading bowl team. Bella is delighted as well. More books means more couch time and more pets from one of her favorite people.

When they’re gone.

Most of the time, Bella seems to appreciate the quiet when the kids are at school. There are rare moments when she wishes they weren't gone and she'll gather a stuffed animal or two from their beds.

Pretzel Dog

Or maybe she's more of a cookies and cream croissant? Warning for any considering adopting a greyhound: her toenail, one lone doggie raptor toenail, poked that hole in our couch just above her shoulder.

What’s that in her ear?

Bella loves to walk with me to pick up our kids from school. On the rare days we're running ahead of schedule, we sometimes walk to school as well. She is just over 60 lbs and is the same height as some of the smaller children in our neighborhood. Thankfully, Bella is gentle, softly touching … Continue reading What’s that in her ear? →
